The Essex 11+: the CSSE test

Many Essex grammar schools use a test run by the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex, known as CSSE. It is an English and maths test, with no reasoning papers.

Which schools use it

The CSSE test is used by a group of selective schools in south and mid Essex. Not every Essex grammar school uses it: some schools in the north of the county run their own arrangements, so check each school you are interested in.

What the test covers

There are two written papers, one in English and one in maths. The English paper has included comprehension and a piece of writing, so the test checks how well a child writes as well as how well they read.

The usual timetable

Registration has usually opened in May and closed in June of Year 5. The test has been held on a Saturday in mid-September, with results in mid-October, before the 31 October application deadline.

Confirm the dates each year on the CSSE website.

How to practise

Focus on maths, reading comprehension and accurate writing. Regular reading builds vocabulary, and short pieces of writing with feedback on structure and punctuation help with the written paper.

Kestrel's maths, comprehension and spelling and grammar topics fit this test well. Kestrel does not mark free writing, so plan some writing practice alongside.

Kestrel is independent and is not connected with any school, local authority, consortium or test provider. All practice content is original, and no pass guarantee is given.
