The Buckinghamshire 11+: the Secondary Transfer Test

Buckinghamshire's grammar schools share one test, the Secondary Transfer Test. Most children at Buckinghamshire state primary schools are entered automatically, which makes the county unusual.

Updated 16 October 2026

Who is entered

Children at state-funded primary schools in Buckinghamshire are normally entered for the test unless their parents opt out. Children at independent schools, at schools outside the county or at certain partner schools need to be registered by their parents.

The council sets a qualifying score for grammar school eligibility. Places are then offered through the normal secondary application.

What the test covers

The test is set by GL Assessment and has covered all four of the usual 11+ areas, split across two papers.

  • Verbal reasoning, with comprehension and technical English such as spelling and grammar.
  • Maths and non-verbal reasoning, including spatial puzzles with shapes.

The usual timetable

For families who need to register, the window has usually run through May into early June of Year 5. Children sit a short familiarisation paper and the test itself in early September of Year 6, and results usually come in early October.

Check the Buckinghamshire Council website for the current year's dates and the registration rules for your child's school.

How to practise

Non-verbal and spatial reasoning are rarely taught in primary school, so children often benefit most from regular, short practice in those areas. Keep maths and vocabulary ticking over alongside.

Kestrel covers all four areas, including shapes, patterns and 3D puzzles, with every answer explained.
